So I never had a uniform in school. It definitely allowed me to better discover my style and play a lot more with my closet — as a kid I absolutely obsessed over the chaos of Cece and Rocky’s (Bella Thorne and Zendaya) styling on Disney’s Shake It Up and that was the first time I can remember being really inspired by fashion! Of course that inevitably led to me arriving to middle school in a mismatched outfit featuring a vest and, yes, a fedora because I just wanted to be Cece (and thought I was good at dancing).
Now as an adult I try to zero in on uniforms I can depend on in my day-to-day life; it’s a modified form of outfit repeating that only requires you to think backward so you’re able to get dressed quicker. I do *not* wake up everyday with an exciting, or even any, outfit in mind so for the days I’m really stumped I depend on my own personal set of uniforms. And, because I’ve slowly loaded up my closet with a variety of each uniform piece, I can rewear the uniform and it can feel different or new everyday (also makes packing much easier too!).
Fall/Winter Uniform: Turtleneck & tights
This is the one you’ve seen me in most frequently this season — I’ve really leaned into it after a pair of leather shorts reminded me how much I love the sleek look of a turtleneck, shorts and tights. The look is consistently chic, still leans into that preppy side of my style but is really easy to go day to night and is overall an effortless 3-piece outfit. On my days I’ve been truly stumped or slumped, this has been a lifesaver.
All Season Uniform: Denim & low heel
What’s on top is subject to change, but a quick combo that always makes me feel like me is pairing a jean with my low pointed toe Tibi shoe (it doesn’t have an official name because it was a sample). The shoe is so comfortable and truly a pointed toe often solves all of my outfit woes. Sometimes it’ll be a blazer, maybe for summer a blouse or T-shirt. For New Year’s Eve (being indoors the whole night) I styled the uniform with a backless top.
Spring/Summer Uniform: Long skirt & small top
Summer for me is the season of maxi skirts — they are such a fun and feminine addition to my wardrobe. I don’t get to wear them as often in the fall/winter mainly due to weather concerns (both getting it dirty and being cold). My tried and true combination is a tight or cropped top with a maxi skirt and a sandal or loafer. Truly it is the best crossover ever, it is so comfortable and has yet to steer me wrong. The only days it can’t be a go to is rainy ones as I don’t want them to get muddy or dirty.
And truthfully, in the moments I wore these, the main driver that it would become a uniform was that I just felt like me! I look at the outfit and say to myself, I would be 100% satisfied if someone defined my personal style with these pieces. Of course my three uniforms lean into a few different vibes but the constant is me, and that’s why they’re my uniform.
